First Generation (1998—2003)

During the first generation, Dodge Durango was considered a medium sized SUV; it was launched in 1998. It could accommodate eight passengers, but it did not really posses all the features of minivan.

The Durango was provided with various engine choices, including

• a couple of V8s,
• a wimpy V6, and
• a strange performance-oriented Shelby model.

The high performance Shelby model was powered by a V8 engine. The car was included with racing stripes, big wheels, and a lowered suspension.

Even though it had three engine choices, none of them was particularly sophisticated and delivered high fuel economy. But, later on, it was designed with a powerful 4.7-liter V8 engine that was much sophisticated and delivered higher fuel economy. It was reserved with good road manners over many other truck-like SUVs. It had long wheelbase, cautiously tuned suspension, and wide tracks.

Second Generation (2004—Present)

The second generation i.e. the current generation Dodge Durango was manufactured in the 2004 model year. In 2006, refreshed styling and side airbags arrived into Dodge dealerships. Until 2008, a 4.7-liter V8 was deployed in the Durango, which was not fuel-efficient or powerful. The engine delivered only 230 hp. The Hemi V8 was also restricted to deliver up to 330 hp. In the same year, some modification were made in the interiors, and new features included-

• DVD-compatible audio,
• My GIG multimedia infotainment system,
• CD/MP3 player, and
• A back-up camera.

2009-2010 Dodge Durango Specs

In 2009, the Durango Limited HEV hybrid was introduced for the first time.

The present Dodge Durango is produced in

• Limited,
• midgrade SLT, and
• SE trim levels.

It comes with the three engine choices;

• Hemi V8 engine that can evolve 376-hp,
• V8 engine for making 303 hp, and
• V6 engine for rendering 210 horsepower.

These are provided with either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive along with low range gearing. On particular four wheel drive models, a single-speed transfer case is included that allows customers to choose a Durango with all-wheel drive too. Each Durango comes with traditional mechanical transmissions; V6 engines are mated with four-speed automatic transmission and V8 engines are coupled with five-speed automatic transmission.

On the other hand, both two-mode hybrid Hemi and the Durango Limited HEV hybrid make use of V8 engine to develop

• 380 pound-feet of torque and
• 345 hp of power.

In hybrid models, two electric motors evolve 235 lb-ft of torque and 87 hp of power. According to many reviews, it has traditional body style and all interior accessories come with high quality materials. But, still fuel economy is poor and changes are expected to be made to improve the fuel economy.

Dodge Durango Exteriors

Pros and Cons

The strengths of the Durango included production packaging facility, whereas its main weakness was its poor quality. Spaces between body panels are inconsistent and sizable, while cabin fit and finish isn’t that great. Moreover, ergonomics exposed the utilitarian pickup beneath, and the 3rd row seating is uncomfortable to kids.
